Parents Concerned After Teacher Dies Of Meningitis Infection

Parents concerned over a meningitis scare are choosing to keep their kids at home even though health officials say the school and students are safe.

Eloy Arvallo is keeping his two kids out of Montara Elementary School in South Gate for a week after a 3rd grade teacher died of a meningitis infection.

“My daughter was in the class of the sick teacher and my son and daughter got the medication but they didn’t want to give it to my son because it wasn’t his class but I was demanding that ‘No. You’re going to give it to my son.”

Dr. Schwartz with the L.A. County Department of Public Health says only a few were given antibiotics.

“There is no evidence whatsoever that the risk is increased among other students at this school and to expose children to antibiotics unnecessarily puts them at risk for side effects or other adverse effects of the antibiotics and we did not want to do so.”
