California Lawmakers Move To Rid UC/CSU Students of Overwhelming Debt

In the effort to fight ever increasing student debt, a proposal in the state assembly would shake up how a lot of financial aid money is used.

The proposal by Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty would expand financial aid by creating scholarships that not only help with tuition but also living expenses. Something Lupita Alcala with the California Student Aid Commission says many have a hard time paying.

“What hasn’t been paid as much attention to is really the cost of attendance and that means room and board and transportation and living expenses. And that sometimes is more than tuition or fees.”

The annual financial aid in the state budget is $2-billion dollars. An estimated $1.6 billion would be allocated towards providing further assistance.

Though possible, Alcala doesn’t think the re-distribution of funding would create many, if any, shortfalls in other departments.
