It’s called the Alternative Custody Program. Benedict Romero went missing after tampering with his ankle monitor, later being found and arrested on the campus of San Gabriel High School.

“He as afforded an opportunity to not only to not be inside the walls of prison but also to start receiving services in the community that would help him once he did parole.”

Krissi Khokhobashvili is with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

“It’s not an answer to prison overcrowding. While it does contribute to having fewer people inside the walls of prison, those people are carefully screened.”

Romero was serving the last 12 months of his two year sentence at home for stealing a car.
