IRS website chokes on Tax Day

By

It’s tax day — and the Internal Revenue Service web site is down – or at least part of it.   The IRS did not have an immediate explanation for the failure. But it said on its website that the Direct Pay service became unavailable shortly before midnight last night.

“On my way over here this morning, I was told that a number of IRS systems are unavailable at the moment,” Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter said at a Congressional hearing this morning. “We are working to resolve this issue and taxpayers should continue to file their returns as they normally would.”

Today is the last day for taxpayers to file their tax returns. It’s also the final day to pay any additional money they owe to Uncle Sam for 2017. If you’re mailing a payment, envelopes with checks have to be postmarked with today’s date in order to avoid late penalties.

On its web site, the IRS reminded people that payments are due even if its Direct Pay option not available.
