On the heels of House republicans nominating President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, former NBA star Dennis Rodman says “WAIT A MINUTE, hold on!”
The Hall of Fame player spoke to Dr. Drew and Lauren Sivan on 790 KABC’s & KGO 810’s Midday Live Thursday about his contribution to thawing relations between North and South Korea.
“North Korea took a big step with South Korea- that’s an awesome step. Then Donald Trump decided he wanted to take another step and meet with him in South Korea,” says Rodman. “I thought I had something to do with that in the beginning.”
Rodman appeared on Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” show in 2013 when Trump praised him for his visits to N. Korea. Trump told Fox News that year “Maybe Dennis is a lot better than what we have.”
Rodman tells KABC he was the one that introduced Kim Jong-Un to Donald Trump through his books.
“I gave Kim Jong-Un 2 or 3 books by Donald Trump when I presented him with gifts for his family,” says Rodman. “He probably had read the books and feels like they had something in common.”
Rodman was heavily criticized for his visits with Kim Jong-Un including by the Obama White House which released a statement saying the administration would have blocked Rodman’s from visiting if they had any power to do so.
The current change in attitude toward North Korea, Rodman believes, has a lot to do with those visits.
“It doesn’t matter if I get the credit or he [Donald Trump] gets the credit, I just think I was at the forefront of opening the door to North Korea. I think I should get some type of like ‘hey Dennis, thank you,” says Rodman.
Although a date has not yet been set for Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un to meet, Rodman says America has a lot to learn from N. Korea. “The people of America are going to find out how much the North Korea people actually do love us!”
