Garcetti Agrees Props 47 & 57 Not Working [AUDIO]

With the passage of Props 47 and 57, a lot of drug addicts are not going for treatment because they no longer face the threat of jail time for dodging it, which has contributed to the current homeless crisis.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti agrees with the homeless advocates and law enforcement officials who say the reforms went too far.

”Realignment has put people who used to be in prison in our county jails. And that means people who have an addiction problem don’t get prosecuted, don’t get arrested because they know there’s no consequence and if there is, it’s on the streets the next day so I would like to say some state leadership fix that.”

As for temporary neighborhood housing for the homeless, the Mayor says the recent flap among Koreatown residents is not an indication that the plan will fail.

“When I sat down with many of the stakeholders in Koreatown – to a ‘t’ – with maybe one or two exceptions, people said that, ‘we don’t not want to have a shelter in Koreatown, we just want more process and input. And I always respect that.”

He says that Angelenos are increasingly willing to help with the program.

“I think NIMBYism has been dying away in this city.”

Mayor Garcetti was a guest on McIntyre in the Morning.
