Beverly Hills fights planned Purple Line subway under high school

Beverly Hills is up in arms about the Metro Purple Line route under its high school, which sits atop abandoned oil wells and pockets of methane gas.

Beverly Hills School Board President Lisa Korbatov (KOR-bah-tov) says the plan to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School will put students at risk.

”We can’t predict the migratory path of methane. So as they’re tunnel boring we don’t know what’s going to happen to methane that’s trapped in the basement of our buildings and any concentration that’s over five percent is explosive.”

She says the diesel trucks that will be hauling construction materials to the site will be spewing toxic exhaust into the air near the classrooms.

“There’s going to be 300 truck trips a day and these are not level four trucks that have no emissions.”

She says a recent court ruling will provide key information about why the tunnel route was changed to go under the school.

”We believe in those documents will be some very significant information that Metro didn’t want us to see about how they chose the route.”

Lisa Korbatov was a guest on McIntyre in the Morning.
