OC District Attorney Candidates Battle Over Handling Of Case

By

A fiery dispute between Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer and Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas continues, as each official accuses the other of mishandling information in the case of a Newport Beach doctor and his girlfriend who are accused of drugging and raping several women.

Spitzer, who is running against Rackauckas in next month’s election for district attorney, has distributed a sealed search warrant to reporters covering the case. He notes that the document was initially an open public record, and he says, he removed the most sensitive information about the alleged victims from it.

Spitzer maintains that the defendants, Grant Robicheaux and his girlfriend, Cerissa Riley, should have been arrested after Newport Beach police executed a search warrant on the couple’s home more than two years ago in 2016.

“So, they wait until September (of this year) to call a press conference to say ‘are there any more victims out there,’ Spitzer says. ‘My opponent is losing this election badly, and he needs free publicity to try to boost his re-election.”

Rackauckas criticizes Spritzer for releasing the sealed search warrant.

“It’s very destructive to the case, callous to the victims… to be honest with you it’s stunning that an attorney would do such a thing,” Rackauckas said. “Basically he’s just trying to build up an argument for his candidacy for district attorney.”

Spitzer and Rackauckas were guests on McIntyre in the Morning.
