Freddie Krueger actor says horror movies are in his DNA

The actor who became famous as horror film character Freddie Krueger will reprise his iconic role on TV’s “The Goldbergs” tonight.

Robert Englund says he took on his signature role in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” while on hiatus from the hit TV show “V” in the early 1980’s.

“I did this little tiny low-budget horror movie for New Line Cinema. I just wanted to work with Wes Craven. He was sort of unknown then. We kind of thought of him as a kind of dark, mystical David Lynch kind of guy.  He’d done ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and ‘Last House on the Left,’ which were very dark, kind of horror art films. And I said yes, probably because I think my inner fan boy wanted to play with the effects makeup.  I think that was something left over and dormant in my DNA from being a kid that liked horror movies. And yeah, I did that movie and you never anticipate it, you never expect it, but it made me an international actor overnight and I’ve been having a blast ever since.”

His dream role? Englund says he always wanted to play Iago in Shakespeare’s “Othello.”

Robert Englund was a guest on McIntyre in the Morning.
