Study: E-Scooter safety is no one’s priority

E-scooters have become a common sight our streets and sidewalks almost overnight.  But a new study warns that they are a growing safety risk for riders and pedestrians.

Jon-Patrick Allem, research scientist at USC, says policy makers in Sacramento are making e-scooters less safe.

”Legislation just passed in the State of California that I believe goes into effect in early 2019 that allows any adult to ride without a helmet.  The current law requires a helmet regardless of age.”

He says the people who run Bird and Lime scooter don’t seem worried about safety, based on his evaluation of their Instagram posts.

”You see that the company kind of endorses the use of their products without necessarily using a helmet or other types of safety gear.”
