LAUSD struggling to reach deal with teachers union

The teachers and the Los Angeles Unified School District appear to be on a collision course with teachers poised to strike.
Even with a surplus, Nick Melvoin, Vice President of the LAUSD Board of Education, says the District cannot afford to pay more.
“The reserve that we have built up is actually already allocated to teacher raises – that’s six percent.”
He says the long-term answer is for the District and the union to grow the revenue pie.
“We have never successfully reformed Proposition 13, which we’re finally talking about – a split roll. We’ve never successfully passed the Parcel Tax.”
He says there is still a chance that an agreement can be worked out and a strike avoided.
“The fact finding, as it’s called, report will be coming out to the public in the next week or two, so we’ll be able to see this third-party mutual arbiter. I think, hopefully, we can get to the table.”
