Expert: returning that gift may be harder than you’d think

It’s time for the post-holiday, post-shopping madness.

Matt Granite, AKA, “The Deal Guy,” says right now is a very busy time for retailers.

“The average number of attempted returns, which includes online, every minute between now and (January 10th) is as high as 1,800.”

He says you’ve really got to pay attention and be ready to act quickly if you exchange or return a gift for a refund.

Amazon.com is known for its amazing customer service. But, says Granite, returning can be a bit tricky.

“There’s a common misconception that companies with good customer service have great return policies. Amazon makes it very easy to return an item, but they have a horrendous return policy.”

The problem, he says, is people purchase many gifts in November without realizing that Amazon has a 30-day return policy.

“So, 30-days from when you see the item on sale to when the person gets it – they’re completely out of luck.”

He says you really have to read the fine print.

“Keep in mind that you need a PhD in returns to understand the flowchart that gives the different deadlines for each department. So it’s not always one size fits all for a policy and make sure (you) keep that in mind. There’s some very complicated return policies out there.”
