Coyotes are just about everywhere in Southern California. Expert Rob Erickson says, rule number one is don’t assume your pets can protect themselves.

”Forget about the doggie doors, you can’t leave your pets unattended.”

He says many coyotes will not pose a threat. But others will be more aggressive and more bold when it comes to seeking out food. But Erickson says the biggest problem is people – specifically the ones who leave out food.

”And more often that not, what we find in our area, is somebody’s feeding that animal. Somebody thinks they’re doing the animal a favor by feeding it.”

He says coyotes will keep coming back for the food. And that can include pet food that was left out for dogs and cats.
