The Coast Guard is issuing emergency safety requirements for boaters in the wake of that deadly fire off the Channel Islands.

The Coast Guard wants to make sure ship operators across America are following safety procedures, maintaining safety equipment and reducing possible hazards. A criminal investigation is examining a Labor Day boat fire that killed 34 people near Santa Cruz Island. Federal agents are examining whether the chartered diving boat lacked a required night watchman. They’re also looking into the possibility that battery charging stations might have sparked the fire.
