(BRANDON, Fla.) -- A 36-year-old Florida man is trapped under rubble after a large sinkhole swallowed the bedroom of his Florida home overnight, officials say.
Rescue crews have been unable to reach the man, who has not been identified, because the 100-foot wide sinkhole is expanding.
"It is unsafe at this time for us to be in the hole so we're near it. We've backed out. Code enforcement has condemned the house," says Jessica Damico, a spokeswoman for the Hillsborough Country Fire and Rescue.
"They had radar come in and they've determined approximately 50 feet from the center of the bedroom. So pretty much the entire house is overtop the sinkhole," she explains.
The man's family was evacuated from the Tampa area home safely, including his brother, who tried to help him. A sheriff's deputy who arrived after the residents called 911 was able to pull the man's brother out.
Officials have had no contact with the man since he fell in the sinkhole.
"They put in some equipment, sound and motion monitoring equipment and found nothing," Damico says.
The house could completely collapse within hours, according to officials.
