People in foreign countries are freaking out about the prospect of a President Donald Trump. Foreign Policy Magazine Editor and CEO David Rothkopf says foreigners can’t understand the appeal of someone who says such appalling things.
“I’ve been out of the country frequently in the past couple of months and people are like, ‘What are you guys thinking? I mean here is a guy with no experience in government, saying absolutely insane things; racist, authoritarian, inflammatory, pro-torture, anti-Muslim, anti-Mexican … apparently willing to say anything that will get him a vote.’ And they’re like, ‘This is the United States and you have your ups and your downs, but we expect you to have democracy in a certain kind of reasonable way and it looks like you guys are heading to crazy town.’ ”
Rothkopf says people in other countries are very worried that Trump might win.
“All of a sudden you have this guy who’s a cross between (media tycoon and former Italian Prime Minister who was convicted of tax fraud) Silvio Berlusconi and some kind of crazy television clown president of the United States.”
He says Trump has no ideology but “Trumpism” which means he’ll say anything that advances his cause.
Rothkopf was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning with Doug McIntyre and Terrie Rae Elmer.
