A woman will be on the face of America’s most ubiquitous denomination – the bill that every ATM spits out. The grassroots advocacy group Women on 20s has been pushing for the change of face to an American female hero on the 20 dollar bill for more than a year. Women on 20s President Barbara Ortiz Howard says the newly designed bill should appear by 2020.
“We have received assurance from Treasury that they are going to bring together the pieces that will make this happen sooner. And that would include the Federal Reserve Board has to give the green light and they said they spoke with (Fed Chair) Janet Yellin and that she is behind this.”
The change from President Andrew Jackson to Harriet Tubman on the bill will effectively educate Americans about her significance in American history as a slave-turned abolitionist and suffragist in the same way we are reminded every day that George Washington was a Revolutionary War hero and the nation’s first president.
“These are messages that get telegraphed to us in our daily experience and without those kind of messages about women who have really shaped our country and influenced policy from the sideline for many, many decades, even centuries. This is going to change our perspective.”
Barbara Ortiz Howard was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning Show with Doug McIntyre and Terri-Rae Elmer.
