Congress has come up with a deal to help California National Guard soldiers stuck with having to pay back bonuses the Pentagon said were fraudulently accepted. Lawmakers say the Pentagon has to forgive the debts given out during the height of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, when the country was struggling to keep enough soldiers in the field. The Los Angeles Times reports the agreement seeks to strike a balance between the Pentagon’s worries about fraud in the bonus system and lawmakers’ attempts to resolve a scandal that has hurt thousands of military veterans and sparked a public furor.
