LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is hoping to get hundreds of ex-convicts hired at his “Second Chance” job fair, a day after the city council votes to “Ban the Box”
Aaron Guardo was convicted for assault with a deadly weapon and likes the Fair Chance Initiative.
“I’ve been out two years, working hard. I start school in January with an apprenticeship with the union. Just trying to go farther in life, try and make it the best I can.”
Mayor Garcetti says the ordinance that stops employers from asking about someone’s criminal history will lower the recidivism rate.
“And that’s like a scarlet letter that they carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
Councilman Mitch Englander voted No on the initiative, saying it has good intentions but thinks it creates a burden on employers.
