What price road repair? The Los Angeles Times reports today that getting legislators in Sacramento to go along with Governor Brown’s $5.2 billion a year tax to fix the state’s crumbling roads and bridges took considerable arm-twisting and some very expensive enticements. The governor and legislative leaders ended up giving nearly $1 billion to pay for specific transportation projects in the districts of legislators who had been on the fence. $500-million went to sway Republican state Senator Anthony Cannella of Ceres. The money will pay for projects in his district, including the extension of a commuter rail line from the Bay Area to Merced. The bill was passed by the state Senate and Assembly last night.
