The speed limit on more than half of L.A. city streets are unenforceable.

Police can only use a radar gun or a laser to catch speeders on streets that have been surveyed.

“The survey, the time has lapsed so the streets have to be surveyed every seven to 10 years and it’s probably beyond that,” said L.A Department of Transportation Spokesman Oliver Hou.

Hou says 58-percent of L.A.’s street have yet to be re-surveyed.

“A few years back, we lost some staff and so this backlog has started to pile up and we are working and we had hired some more people to work on reducing this backlog.”

Hou says more surveyors have been hired to cut down on the backlog.

The department couldn’t immediately provide which streets speed is unenforceable.
