A new bill is making the rounds in Sacramento. It aims to save buildings from total destruction and not just more lives in the event of a major earthquake.
Current retrofit efforts require a certain level of safety so people can get out should a quake strike, but it requires the financial responsibility of total destruction of the structure on the owners.
AB 1857 would change building codes so contractors create a structurally more sound building.
Seismologist and author Dr. Lucy Jones, founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, is pushing for the bill’s passage.
“It would call on California to develop a functional recovery building code standard. Instead of saying just make sure you don’t collapse, it says make sure this building isn’t disposable. That we can recover the use of it in a reasonable time after the earthquake.”
