The aftermath of the devastating fires will bring up the issue of fire insurance.
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones says he’s working to make it easier for homeowners to renew their fire insurance policies in high risk areas by requiring insurance companies to update their risk models.
”The models don’t take into account the things that homeowners and communities are doing at the request of fire officials to make their homes defensible. And that just isn’t right.”
He says state offers an alternative for homeowners.
”There is a fire insurance nonprofit of last resort called the Fair Plan, which is set up by the legislature to write fire insurance regardless of where you are and what the risk is.”
