With Governor Brown leaving office, lawmakers in Sacramento are getting ready to take another swing at extending bar hours until 4 a.m.
But the idea faces plenty of opposition. Patricia Rillera, the Regional Executive Director of Southern California for Mothers Against Drunk Driving – or M.A.D.D., says keeping bars open past the current 2 a.m. closing time will inevitably cost more lives.
”Because drunk driving is a 100 percent preventable crime that claims someone’s life every eight hours in California and it’s the leading killer on our nation’s roadways.”
She says research shows people staying later will consume more alcohol.
“Statistics do not show that average individual in a bar between 2 and 4 is going to be cooling off, drinking water to sober up. It’s the opposite of that.”
