Bahamians struggle without basic services as death toll climbs in wake of Hurricane Dorian

The Bahamian health minister says the death toll of at least 30 could be “significantly higher” on Abaco and Grand Bahama islands from Hurricane Dorian.

Freelance reporter Kimberly Mullings agrees that the death toll is likely to climb much higher.

“I have watched people who’ve rescued more than 70 people in a matter of hours and if those 70 people can tell you how many of their relatives they watched go under – or something like that, I’m pretty sure the number is more than 30.”

She tells the KABCthe government is struggling to provide basic services.

“It’s about five days since people have had water to drink. Our water was shut off on Sunday at 7 p.m. The government is collecting everything and then trying to disseminate. People can’t wait for things to be distributed as slow as that.”
Meanwhile, the United Nations is sending ready-to-eat meals, providing satellite communications equipment, generators and airlift storage units. Companies such as Royal Caribbean and American Airlines also have been donating supplies.
