For the first time in eight years, the Los Angeles City Council has a new president.

And for the first time, the LA City Council president is a Latina. As expected, Nury Martinez was selected by the full council to be the next council president. She’ll replace Herb Wesson, who is stepping down from that role to run for the Board of Supervisors. Joe Buscaino was elected as president pro tem. Both council members are active in homeless issues and are both children of immigrants.
