California Attorney General Announces Legal Action Against Uber, Lyft
(Sacramento, CA) — Ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft may be forced to reclassify their workers after a legal motion filed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra earlier today. The motion seeks to halt them from continuing to classify drivers as independent contractors, a move that Uber driver Patricia Mulholland says would cause her to lose her job.
But Steve Smith with California Labor Federation says there’s nothing in California’s new employment law AB5 that forces Uber to schedule employees for eight hour shifts or force them to work in specific areas. The Attorney General is joined by the City Attorneys of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco in filing the preliminary injunction motion. A ballot initiative that would exempt gig companies from AB5 is also headed to voters in November.
