(Los Angeles, CA) — Racism is officially a public health crisis in Los Angeles. Yesterday the city council voted unanimously to “recognize racism as a root cause of poverty.” Officials are promising to do a better job tackling inequality that affects the city’s black and Latino residents. They point out black people account for eight percent of the local population, but disproportionately account for 29 percent of the jail population, and 42 percent of the homeless population. More Latino residents are also dying from coronavirus than any other race.
