(Washington, DC) — CDC Director Robert Redfield says schools should reopen with safety standards in place. Redfield testified in a House hearing and said schools play an important role in the overall development of children. He stressed that longterm isolation of children is harmful and argued, “We need to get on with it.” Redfield also noted that schools offer many students vital nutritional and mental health support. President Trump has been pushing hard for schools to start reopening.
Critics say schools should not start reopening without solid plans to ensure the health and safety of students and teachers. Dr. Redfield is a member of President Trump’s coronavirus task force. In Los Angeles, the UTLA- the teacher’s union- issued a 17-page document listing numerous demands before schools can be reopened, many having little to do with in-class teaching.
