(San Francisco, CA) — Uber and Lyft are threatening to shut down service in California on Friday. The ride-hailing companies are trying to undo AB 5 that requires gig economy companies to reclassify their independent contractors as employees. Uber and Lyft say they want to pause their ride-hailing service until voters decide on Proposition 22 in November. If voters approve the initiative, so-called app-based drivers will remain independent contractors and will not be subject to AB5 or other labor laws that cover full and part-time employees.
