(Compton, CA) — Compton is launching the largest universal basic income program in the nation. About eight-hundred low-income residents will receive cash on a monthly basis. The so-called, \”Compton Pledge\” program will be evaluated by an independent research team every six months. Two-point-five million dollars in private donations will initially fund the program. All donations will go to the Fund for Guaranteed Income, which is led by Nika Soon-Shiong, the daughter of LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong.

Several cities across the nation are considering launching their own programs. In California, Stockton began a program last year. Los Angeles and Long Beach are considering their own.
