Governor Newsom: COVID-19 Vaccine Won’t Be Widely Available Until 2021

(Sacramento, CA) — Governor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday a COVID-19 vaccine will not be widely available in California until next year. Two drug companies are working to have vaccines by the end of the year, but Newsom says both will be in very limited supply at first, and announced who would be at the front of the line to get the vaccine.

Newsom says he’s unsure of when the vaccines will be distributed to the public in 2021, but patients and health care workers will be prioritized. Also at the top of the list, is ‘the incarcerated’- criminals in prisons, along with those over 65, in nursing facilities and people with disabilities.

Newsom also announced the formation of a COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force to provide an independent analysis separate from federal agencies. Newsom says California will not release any vaccines until the task force approves them, apparently in spite of approval by the FDA.
