Far-left George Gascon Sworn-In As New L.A. County D.A., Announces Sweeping Changes
(Los Angeles, CA) — George Gascon is Los Angeles County’s new District Attorney. He was sworn-in Monday and kicked off his term by announcing several sweeping changes.
He will not allow the cash bail system to be used for misdemeanors, non-serious and non-violent crimes. Gascon also plans to uphold a campaign promise by not seeking the death penalty, and says he will also re-sentence inmates on death row to life in prison. He also sent a letter to local law enforcement agencies, announcing he’ll cut down on prosecuting people accused of crimes related to addiction, homelessness and poverty. Gascon has introduced a new use-of-force board that will review cases dating back to 2012. The new D.A.’s office plans to reexamine four police-shooting cases that were already reviewed by former D.A. Jackie Lacey, who cleared the involved officers of wrongdoing.
Gascon will eliminate cash bail- saying:
:We know now that our system of money bail is as unsafe as it is unjust. The rich can be dangerous while the poor can pose ZERO threat to society.How much money you have in your bank account is a terrible proxy fordangerousness. As a result, cash bail poses a serious risk to public safety.And today there are hundreds of people anguishing in jail not because they represent a danger to our community, but because they can’t afford to purchase their freedom.”
George Gascon’s office, which is the largest prosecutor’s office in the U.S., will also retroactively eliminate sentencing enhancements for things like illegal gun possession and gang membership. He also says: “According to prison evaluations, 50 percent of all those sentenced in LA \County are rated “low-risk” to reoffend.” So apparently he is just fine with the risk being carried by law-abiding taxpayers.
Gascon also claims he won’t stand for dishonesty from law enforcement.
