Judge Allows 16 New York Pool Halls To Reopen With COVID-19 Restrictions

16 pool halls that sued New York state to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic are getting the go ahead to rack ’em up. An upstate judge granted a preliminary injunction Thursday, allowing only those pool halls who were part of the legal action to reopen as long as COVID-19 safety protocols are in place. The 16 pool halls are located across the state and include Amsterdam Billiards in the East Village. They’ve all been shuttered since March 18th, despite establishments like bowling alleys and casinos subsequently allowed to reopen. The state has argued that the felt-covered billiard tables are uniquely hard to sanitize against the virus.
