(Washington, DC) — The Senate is affirming the constitutionality of the impeachment trial of former President Trump. The vote to proceed with the trial was 56-44. Lawyers for the ex-president argued that Trump cannot be tried because he is no longer in office. House impeachment managers said the former president must be held accountable for his actions while he was still in office. A single House article of impeachment accuses Trump of inciting the violent and deadly attack at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. Six Republicans voted with Democrats to affirm the constitutionality of the impeachment trial.
