Newsom Picks Rob Bonta As Attorney General

(San Francisco, CA) — California Assemblyman Rob Bonta is being named as the state’s new Attorney General. Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that he has chosen Bonta to lead California’s Department of Justice. He will be the state’s first Filipino to hold the position. Bonta was first elected to the State Assembly in 2012 and has been an advocate for criminal justice reform, including efforts to eliminate the money bail system. Bonta was born in the Philippines and immigrated with his family to California as a child. Bonta replaces Xavier Becerra, who left the Attorney General post last week to become President Biden’s Secretary for Health and Human Services.
