(Thousand Oaks, CA) — Investigators have uncovered skimming devices installed secretly at automatic teller machines at several banks in Thousand Oaks. Five devices designed to pry information from California’s unemployment debit cards were discovered at a number of undisclosed banks, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The debit cards are not designed to encrypt data, making them attractive targets for thieves who can generate fraudulent withdrawals from a customer’s account. The so-called “Deep Insert Skimmer” devices were discovered at various walk-up ATMs in the last two weeks.
