(Cleveland, OH) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians. The team announced the name change in a video on Twitter. The name Guardians is spelled out at the end of the video. The news comes after the team announced last summer they would consider a name change about the same time the Washington Redskins abandoned their nickname.
The name change takes effect after this season is over. The team says they did 140 hours of interviews with numerous people including fans and members of the community. The name change comes after the team went by the Indians nickname for more than 100 years.
