(Washington, DC) — The IRS will stop the use of facial recognition software to identify taxpayers. The decision comes after four House Democrats wrote to the IRS Commissioner urging the agency to stop the use of ID-me. They brought up privacy and data security concerns along with lack of access for those without Internet. They said using a third party software to verify taxpayers’ identities could be dangerous because it gathers sensitive information that could be a target for cyberattacks. The IRS said it will “transition away” from the software in the coming weeks.
