IRS Backlog Causes Confusion
(Undated) — It’s only February but some taxpayers are receiving a notice from the Internal Revenue Service saying they have not filed their taxes yet. According to the IRS, the letters some people received recently were in regard to last year’s taxes. Due to a backlog, more than 24-million 2020 returns have not yet been processed, meaning even though you may have sent in your return, the automatic notice was still generated. IRS officials say they are going to stop sending out the notices to help reduce the confusion. Meantime, tax experts say it’s still a good idea to respond to the letter, even if you know you filed a return. That’s because once the automated system kicks back in, the late notices may return to your mailbox. No word on when the IRS may catch up on the backlog.
