IRS Hiring 10K New Employees For Tax Return Backlog (Washington, DC) — The Internal Revenue Service is hiring ten-thousand new employees in an attempt to handle a backlog of tax returns. They will add five-thousand in the next couple of months, with another five-thousand by the end of next year. The agency has over 23-million unprocessed forms and requests that need to be attended to, with the goal to get that number down to one-million by the end of the year. The IRS has already begun paying mandatory overtime to over six-thousand employees, as well as hiring contractors.
The IRS is going on a hiring spree. Ten-thousand workers will be hired to work through millions of unprocessed returns. Half of the positions will be filled in the near term while the remaining jobs will come in the next year. The IRS commissioner called this “an all-hands-on-deck approach.”
