(Washington, DC) — President Biden has signed a bill making lynching a federal hate crime for the first time. Speaking at the White House, Biden said the bill is long overdue. The measure is named after Emmett Till, a Black teenager who was brutally tortured and murdered in 1955. The tragedy sparked the civil rights movement. The President called lynching a “pure terror” that has often been committed in broad daylight.
