(Atlanta, GA) — The CDC is confirming nine monkeypox cases in seven states: New York, Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, Washington, California and Virginia. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky says all nine cases are among gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. Monkeypox belongs to the same virus family as smallpox but is a much milder illness. Dr. Walensky says she’s expecting more cases and is urging Americans to be on the lookout for symptoms which include fever and fatigue followed by a rash with pus-filled lesions.

The C-D-C is confirming the first case of monkeypox in California.

Health officials say the patient from Sacramento County recently traveled in Europe. A health provider alerted the county earlier this week when it was just a suspected case. The California Department of Public Health lab also received a test sample and confirmed the case. The person is isolated at home. Health officials believe the risk to the general public is extremely low.
