(Atlanta, GA) — The U.S. today recognizes Juneteenth as a national holiday for the first time. It celebrates June 19th, 1865, which was when the last group of enslaved African Americans were notified they were free in southeast Texas. The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Biden last year.
