NYC Health Commissioner Wants To Rename Monkeypox
(New York, NY) — New York City’s Health Commissioner says monkeypox isn’t an appropriate name for the virus. Dr. Ashwin Vasan is making his appeal to the World Health Organization, saying the name might stigmatized those affected. He added the term monkeypox doesn’t make sense since the virus didn’t originate from monkeys. Vasan says a preferred alternative is M-P-V.
(Washington, DC) — A new report says the U.S. may need seven-billion dollars to respond to a national monkeypox outbreak. The Washington Post says a memo addressed to President Biden estimated it would take about seven-billion dollars to match “the scope and urgency of the current situation.” The report says the estimate was not a formal request for aid but one of a series of options. Federal officials have identified over 35-hundred cases of monkeypox in the U.S., mostly among gay and bisexual men, and warn the virus is likely to spread to broader populations.
