L.A. Could Get More Bike-Friendly Roads

(Los Angeles, CA) — It’s a War of the Wheels in Los Angeles, where activists are trying to add more space on the roads for bikes, not cars. In an effort to make streets safer, a voter initiative could create hundreds of miles of bike and walk-friendly roads. The initiative would fast track a 20-year plan to add bicycle lanes, build wider sidewalks and create more visible crosswalks. Opponents say reducing traffic lanes will only cause more congestion. As of June, 78 pedestrians and nine bicyclists have been killed in L.A. in accidents involving cars. It’s now in the hands of the City Council to decide if the initiative should be voted on or approved flat out.
