(Los Angeles, CA) — An earthquake preparedness drill is expected to take place this week throughout California. People in government offices, businesses and schools throughout the state will stop what they’re doing for one minute to “drop, cover and hold on.” The Great California Shake Out of 2022 is scheduled for Thursday at 10:20 a.m., Pacific Time. ShakeOut.org says the “drills are annual opportunities to learn and practice earthquake safety with millions of people.” The website adds over nine-million Californians are registered to participate in the drill. The Shake Out exercises began in 2008. The main idea is to emphasize precautions during a magnitude seven-point-eight or larger earthquake along the southern-most portion of the San Andreas Fault. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a quake that size could cause two-thousand people to die and injure tens-of-thousands more. It would also cause over 200-billion dollars in damages.
