Federal Water Managers Scold California Cities: Prepare For Possible Water Cuts

(Sacramento, CA) — California may need to prepare for severe water cuts. That warning from federal water managers on Monday to cities and industrial users receiving water from the Central Valley Project. If drought conditions persist into 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says it will be difficult to meet all the needs of the Central Valley Project without enforcing extreme water cuts. The agency adds water storage is near historic lows in the reservoirs it oversees, which irrigate more than three-million acres of land in central California and supply major urban centers in the Greater Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas. The bureau is set to announce initial water supply allocations for the Central Valley Project in February.
