The bill would cap how much landlords can charge for security deposits. Right now, landlords charge two-to-three-times the monthly rent for security deposits as is allowed by law. Democrat Assemblymember Matt Haney is behind it – and wants the amount to only be one month’s rent, saying it will have “an enormous impact on housing affordability for families.” The state has the nation’s second-highest overall rent price, averaging 16-hundred dollars for a one bedroom.
