House Still Without Speaker
(Washington, DC) — The House is still without a Speaker. That’s because California’s Kevin McCarthy once again failed to secure enough votes on the sixth ballot. A group of conservatives has repeatedly blocked McCarthy from replacing outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi. They’ve been voting for Florida’s Byron Donalds.
(Washington, DC) — After three rounds of voting, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy is failing to secure the Speakership. McCarthy was unable to get the 218 votes needed to become Speaker due to opposition from hardline Republicans. The House hasn’t needed more than one vote to elect a Speaker in a century. McCarthy has vowed to continue fighting for the position, while conservative opponents say they’re committed to changing the status quo no matter how many rounds of voting it takes. The chamber will continue to hold votes until a candidate receives a majority vote. The person who’s eventually elected Speaker will replace California Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
